Head of Marine, QBE Asia

Biography

Rama Chandran was appointed in August 2015 as Head of Marine. He has over 40 years of both industry and extensive marine underwriting experience.

Prior to QBE, Rama worked as a Class Underwriter, Marine and Energy for Argo Global Underwriting Asia Pacific. Before that, he was the Head of Marine, SVP for Asia Capital Reinsurance Group Singapore managing a team of Underwriters for both Facultative and Treaty business covering Asia, GCC, Central Asia, Turkey and Australia/New Zealand. Rama is a marine engineer by trade and has worked for Neptune Orient Lines Singapore prior to joining the insurance industry. He came ashore to join Ritchie & Bisset (Far East) as a surveyor and, in 13 years with that firm, rose to Managing Director.

Rama holds a Masters of Business Administration from University of Leicester and is a member of Society of Naval Architect & Marine Engineering and Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union. He is a qualified Marine Engineer Officer (Class 1 Motorship) under the Merchant Shipping Act.

Rama was the Chairman of the Ocean Hull Committee of the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) from 2018 until 2022, and currently remains a member of the committee. He is also a Member of the Marine Committee at the General Insurance Association of Singapore. Other positions Rama holds include being a member on various IUMI Working Groups, collaborating with the International Association of Classification Societies, as well as electric car manufacturers and global car shipping companies.

Rama was named as the 6th most influential people in Marine Insurance globally for 2020 by Lloyd’s List.
