Biography

Kai Weng was appointed the chief executive of GIA in 2017. 

As GIA CE, he engages and collaborates with government, commercial and public stakeholders to identify issues, recommend and implement solutions on sector-wide matters. He makes public and media statements on behalf of the general insurance sector. 

Since 1999, he has worked for different segments of the insurance value chain:

• corporate insurance buyer
• insurer
• insurance and reinsurance broker
• insurance trade association

 
He currently serves as:

• Co-chair of the Healthcare-Insurance Industry Pilot
• Chair of the ASEAN Council of Bureaux
• Member of the Singapore College of Insurance Academic and Examination Board
• Member of the Insurance Culture and Conduct Steering Committee's 2 sub-committees for Corporate Governance and general insurance intermediaries
  
  

He served as:

• Board director of the National Fire and Emergency Preparedness Council
• Member of the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore Taxpayer Feedback Panel
• Member of the Institute of Banking and Finance Standards Committee
• Member of the Emerging Stronger Taskforce Alliance for Action (EST AfA) on Enabling Safe and Innovative Visitor Experiences Insurance Workgroup
   

In the EST AfA Insurance Workgroup, he worked with government agencies like Singapore Tourism Board and commercial entities like Changi Airport Group to develop and implement a new inbound travel insurance product to support the reopening of borders during the Covid disruption. This was a core enabler of the restart of inbound visitor travel to Singapore in 2020.

He was invited by Nanyang Technological University to give a 1-hour lecture from 2017 to 2019, where he pitched general insurance career opportunities to first year business students as part of their AB1000 #GetReal module. 

He is a CFA charterholder and a Chartered Accountant of Singapore, and has bachelor degrees in accountancy and laws.
